Warning over car break-ins

MOTORISTS are warned to take more care with valuables after several car break-ins around Hobart.

Thieves have targeted car parks surrounding popular walking tracks and picnic spots, stealing handbags, wallets, mobile phones and laptops. Many thefts have occurred in daylight and during busy times of the day when there are lots of other people around, but the thieves have still avoided being seen. The thefts have prompted police to issue a warning to motorists, reminding them not to leave bags, backpacks or valuables in cars. If items must be left in cars they should be stored in the boot or hidden. Among those hit by thieves in recent weeks was Mt Nelson's Clare Rutherford. Miss Rutherford, 21, went for a quick walk on the summit of Mt Wellington on Wednesday last week about 3pm. She returned to the car about 30 minutes later to find the passenger window smashed and her handbag, wallet, mobile phone and Olympus digital camera gone.
